C5:Transformative Facilitation: Welcoming Conflict in the Service of Connection and Collaboration
Presenter: Jim & Jori Manske
IAF Core Competencies: A, B, C, D, E, F
Number of participants: unlimited
Many facilitation courses do an excellent job of teaching participants the practical nuts and bolts of facilitation practice, e.g. how to set an agenda, how to utilize processes to understand problems, how to move toward resolution with brainstorming, etc. What many do not address is the underlying reasons many meetings are not productive: people do not feel enough safety or trust to voice their deepest concerns; conflicts aren’t addressed to anyone’s satisfaction; and people agree to compromises in the meeting but then do not follow through on agreements, stimulating frustration, discouragement and disappointment. In this concurrent session, we will co-create an environment for receiving from all participants that which is important to move a project forward, focusing on what is universal and non-controversial
, then crafting proposals that address the needs of everyone involved
. Then choosing specific and concrete next steps to move into action to address needs.
